Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a glycoprotein hormone composed of alpha and beta subunits that binds the luteinising hormone (LH) receptor. It mimics LH signalling in Leydig cells, stimulating testosterone production, and in the ovary it supports follicular maturation and ovulation. Because its beta subunit differs from LH, HCG has a longer half-life and is used in reproductive research to model LH-driven steroidogenesis and follicular development. The structural basis for this receptor specificity was reviewed by Pierce and Parsons (Annual Review of Biochemistry, 1981).
Researchers use it in fertility protocols, testosterone-restoration models, reproductive endocrinology and pregnancy-signalling studies, and to compare gonadotropin action with HMG and kisspeptin. The preparation supplies 5000 IU of research-grade hormone in a 3ml vial. Store lyophilized powder at -20C, protect it from light, and reconstitute with bacteriostatic water according to institutional protocols. Common research questions concern the relative potency of HCG versus LH, the duration of Leydig-cell desensitisation, and how HCG-driven testosterone production compares with HMG-driven spermatogenesis.
This product is intended strictly for laboratory research by qualified professionals. It is not approved for human consumption, clinical treatment or therapeutic use. In male reproductive research, HCG is used to stimulate Leydig-cell testosterone production and to model intratesticular testosterone, which is difficult to measure systemically. In female protocols it triggers final oocyte maturation before retrieval. Dose-finding studies should account for Leydig-cell desensitisation with continuous exposure and for the longer half-life of HCG relative to LH.
Purity is usually confirmed by immunoassay and mass spectrometry. Because HCG is a glycoprotein rather than a simple peptide, its carbohydrate structure affects receptor binding and immunogenicity, so batch characterisation should include both mass and glycan analysis.
