Neuro and Sleep Research Peptides

Neuropeptide research sits at the intersection of plasticity, stress, sleep, and nerve repair. The compounds in this category are short peptides that modulate signalling rather than replace a neurotransmitter. That makes them useful for mechanistic studies, but it also means the route, timing, and matrix matter as much as the dose.

What the research covers

Semax is an ACTH(4-10) analog with a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro extension that increases stability. It is studied for BDNF and TrkB upregulation in the hippocampus, dopaminergic and serotonergic modulation, and neuroprotection in ischaemia and optic-nerve injury models. It has little effect on adrenal steroidogenesis compared with full ACTH.

Selank is a tuftsin-derived heptapeptide studied for anxiolytic activity, GABAergic transmission, monoamine turnover, and BDNF expression. It is used in anxiety, stress-adaptation, and memory-consolidation models. The blend combines semax and selank for studies where cognitive load and stress coexist.

DSIP is a delta sleep-inducing peptide studied for slow-wave sleep, REM latency, corticosterone and ACTH responses, and pain perception. Sleep studies use EEG and EMG rather than subjective reports. Because DSIP is rapidly degraded, repeated administration or stabilised analogues are common.

ARA-290 is an EPO-derived innate repair receptor agonist studied for nerve regeneration, neuropathic pain, and tissue inflammation. Unlike erythropoietin, it does not drive erythroid progenitor expansion at research concentrations, which makes it useful when haematocrit is a confounding variable.

How to choose

For BDNF, TrkB, or neuroprotection endpoints, semax is the direct tool. For anxiety, GABA, or stress-reactivity endpoints, selank is the better fit. For sleep architecture, DSIP is the relevant peptide and EEG/EMG are the relevant measurements. For neuropathy or innate repair receptor signalling, ARA-290 is the specific agonist.

Documentation and handling

All five are peptides and follow standard lyophilised storage at -20C. Because they are short and rapidly cleared, studies should report the route and the timing relative to behavioural testing. Blood-brain barrier penetration is an open question for several of them and should not be assumed.

FAQ

Do these peptides cross the blood-brain barrier? That varies by peptide and is not fully established. Do not assume central exposure without measuring it.

Can I combine semax and selank? The blend exists for that purpose, but include single-peptide arms to separate the effects.

Is DSIP a sedative? No. It is a research peptide studied for sleep architecture, not an approved sleep medication.
