ARA-290 (cibinetide) is an 11-amino-acid peptide derived from the helix-B surface of erythropoietin. It signals through the innate repair receptor, an EPOR/CD131 heteromer, rather than the classical erythropoietin receptor, so it is studied for tissue protection without stimulating red-blood-cell production. Brines and colleagues (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2008) described the non-erythropoietic, tissue-protective peptide family and established the receptor rationale for ARA-290. Subsequent preclinical and early clinical work has examined small-fibre nerve regeneration, neuropathic pain, corneal nerve repair and resolution of inflammation in models of diabetes and sarcoidosis.
Researchers use ARA-290 to separate EPO's repair signalling from its haematopoietic effects, and to compare innate repair receptor activation with angiogenesis-focused peptides such as BPC-157. The peptide is supplied as 10mg of research-grade material in a 3ml vial. Store lyophilized powder at -20C, protect it from light, and reconstitute with bacteriostatic water according to institutional protocols. Common research questions concern its receptor selectivity, its lack of erythropoietic activity, and the extent to which animal neuropathy data translate to human small-fibre models.
This product is intended strictly for laboratory research by qualified professionals. It is not approved for human consumption, clinical treatment or therapeutic use. Unlike erythropoietin, ARA-290 does not drive erythroid progenitor expansion at research concentrations, which makes it useful when haematocrit is a confounding variable. Animal and early human studies have measured corneal nerve fibre density, intraepidermal nerve fibre density, neuropathic pain scores and inflammatory cytokine profiles. Investigators should note that the peptide is short-lived and that tissue-protective effects in rodent models are often measured after repeated administration rather than a single dose.
