T3 25 (Liothyronine Sodium 25 mcg) is Evolve Biolabs' active thyroid hormone tablet, supplied as 100 tablets in sealed blister strips. T3 is the biologically active form of thyroid hormone and acts directly on metabolism without the conversion step required by T4.
What T3 25 Is
Liothyronine sodium is the synthetic sodium salt of triiodothyronine, the thyroid hormone that regulates basal metabolic rate, thermogenesis, protein turnover and carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. The thyroid gland produces both T4 and T3, but T3 is several times more potent at the receptor. Liothyronine is therefore the direct-acting hormone, with a faster onset and shorter half-life than levothyroxine. T3 25 delivers the standard 25 mcg strength across 100 tablets.
The History of Cytomel
Desiccated thyroid was the first effective thyroid replacement, used from the late nineteenth century onward. Triiodothyronine was characterised in the 1950s, and Smith Kline and French brought synthetic liothyronine to market as Cytomel shortly afterwards. Clinicians used it for hypothyroidism, myxoedema and thyroid suppression, and researchers adopted it as a tool for measuring metabolic rate. Its quick onset made it attractive when a rapid effect was needed.
How It Works
Liothyronine binds nuclear thyroid hormone receptors and increases transcription of genes involved in energy metabolism, protein synthesis and thermogenesis. Because it is already the active hormone, it does not depend on deiodinase conversion, so effects appear within hours. It has a half-life of roughly one to two days, shorter than T4. It is metabolised in the liver and peripheral tissues and excreted in bile and urine.
What the Research Shows
- Liothyronine has been studied for hypothyroidism and myxoedema.
- Research shows a faster onset and shorter half-life than levothyroxine.
- Thyroid hormone effects on metabolic rate and thermogenesis are well characterised.
- Combination T3 and T4 therapy has been investigated in thyroid research.
Research Context
Liothyronine research is closely tied to the distinction between replacement and suppression. In replacement, the goal is to restore normal thyroid hormone levels; in suppression, the goal is to reduce TSH output. Studies of combination T3 and T4 therapy have produced mixed results, with some participants reporting better wellbeing on combination treatment and others showing no difference. Cardiac effects, including tachycardia and atrial fibrillation, are the main safety concern at excessive exposure, and long-term thyroid excess also affects bone turnover.
Strength, Pack and Authentication
Each tablet contains 25 mcg of liothyronine sodium, with 100 tablets per pack. The tablets are sealed in moisture-resistant blister strips inside a printed, tamper-evident carton stating the compound, strength and tablet count. A verification code on the packaging links the pack to Evolve Biolabs' records, and the 25 mcg unit allows precise adjustment of dose.
