Description

Glutathione is a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine and glycine and the principal intracellular antioxidant in mammalian cells. It neutralises reactive oxygen species, regenerates vitamins C and E, serves as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase, and supports phase II detoxification in the liver. Meister and Anderson (Annual Review of Biochemistry, 1983) established much of the core biochemistry of glutathione metabolism, including the gamma-glutamyl cycle and the role of cysteine availability in sustaining intracellular glutathione.

Research examines its involvement in oxidative-stress-related disease, immune-cell function, skin pigmentation and cellular ageing, and compares glutathione repletion with NAD+ and sirtuin pathways. The 1500mg presentation provides a larger analytical quantity for studies that require repeated time points or higher concentrations. Store the lyophilized powder at -20C, protect it from light, and reconstitute with bacteriostatic water according to institutional protocols.

Common research questions concern the stability of reduced glutathione in solution, the extent to which exogenous glutathione raises intracellular levels, and how oral, topical and injected routes compare. This product is intended strictly for laboratory research by qualified professionals. It is not approved for human consumption, clinical treatment or therapeutic use. The reduced (GSH) and oxidised (GSSG) forms are not interchangeable, and the GSH/GSSG ratio is often a more informative endpoint than total glutathione.

Analytical methods include enzymatic recycling assays, HPLC with electrochemical detection and mass spectrometry. Because exogenous glutathione is poorly absorbed orally, studies compare oral, topical, inhaled and parenteral routes, and some use liposomal or precursor strategies such as NAC, glycine and cysteine to raise intracellular levels.
